At the very beginning, you have the opportunity to lead one of the three influential Roman families that control one of the regions of the Empire. But you can also take control of other nations: Ptolemaic Egypt, the Achaemenid Empire, Carthage, Persia, Greece and Sparta, numerous tribes of Gauls, Britons, Iberians, Moors, Scythians and Germans. At first, you will control a small area, but as time goes on, your cities will grow, your army will expand, and you will be able to start expanding by capturing barbarian cities or declaring war on another nation.
It should be known that each nation has its own characteristics in terms of troops. The Achaemenids and Carthage are able to field mighty war elephants, the Greeks are famous for their phalanxes of spearmen, and the Persians rely more on horse and foot archers. Rome has excellent and balanced infantry and siege artillery, while the Egyptians rely on war chariots. It should be remembered that the larger your empire is and the more peoples are included in it, the harder it will be to maintain order - uprisings will break out here and there, so in addition to war, you must also deal with diplomacy and domestic politics, otherwise the hard-won state will fall apart.
