This will allow you to gain more options, such as capturing roadblocks, establishing full-scale industrial resource extraction, or providing serious defenses to defend against other factions or natural enemies. Capturing a roadblock allows you to start researching new technologies, which in turn allows you to get improved resources, buildings, equipment, and so on. Pay special attention to energy sources. Firstly, fossil fuels have a negative impact on the environment, and secondly, they are finite and sooner or later their reserves will be exhausted.
