You don't have to upgrade your heroes, but just immerse yourself in quick battles in which you can either win or lose - it all depends on your skills.
If you can restore the objects on the island, then you will be able to increase the abilities of the characters. It is important that the whole team acts together, as a well-coordinated mechanism, and only then you will be able to meet a common enemy and defeat him.
