It is worth noting two things thanks to which the new "Demigod", which does not promise any innovative ideas (including unique gameplay and revolutionary graphics), attracted so much attention. Firstly, the work of the developers was headed by Chris Taylor himself - the man under whose leadership such masterpieces as "Dungeon Siege" and the standard strategy of the late 90s - "Total Annihilation", on the basis of which the same studio released "Supreme Commander" in 2007. Gas Powered Games drew extraordinary inspiration from the popular expansion to Warcraft 3 - Defense of the Ancient (popularly known as "DotA"). It is hard to call the plot in Demigod a full-fledged part of the game. Rather, this is just an excuse to pit eight fighters against each other in the arena... There are no campaigns in Demigod. Single battles also do not carry any semantic load. After the introductory video, only small biographical information about each character will remind you of the plot. Against the background of the focus on network battles, the lack of a plot does not look like a big omission. Single battles here are more likely to appear as a tutorial before the upcoming online battles, rather than a full-fledged gameplay. To measure your strength with other players in online mode is offered in three modes: free battle - quick battle, any players can join the game, skirmish - in this mode, the server automatically selects an opponent for you, depending on the level of the game shown earlier, and pantheon - a virtual Olympus of demigods. Players choose their character and start the battle for the top of the rating. Every victory brings points, every defeat takes them away. So, the game begins with the choice of one of the 8 demigods, which in turn are divided into 2 groups. Assassins are assassins who rely only on their own abilities. They deal great damage to other demigods. Generals are the leaders of detachments and even entire armies of minions and servants. Warlords have the ability to summon reinforcements with scrolls.
"Demigod" borrowed the graphics engine from the RTS "Supreme Commander" – the same Gas Powered Game. A slightly modified and corrected engine shows quite a decent picture. Eye-pleasing spell special effects, elaborate animations, and enemies scattered by the blow of Ishmael's hammer. The game, of course, may seem outdated and not very relevant, but the developers of "Demigod" did not promise "mountains of gold" in this direction. Chris Taylor said in an interview that the game would run even on computers that lagged behind the progress, but the promise was not kept. For optimization, you can safely give a weak "C". Even on sufficiently powerful systems, the game does not always feel comfortable, because the FPS at crucial moments of the battle can go beyond the permissible limits. Moving the camera away in order to view the entire map, you can watch a slideshow of 10 frames per second (the game was tested on the following configuration: Intel Core 2 Duo E7400 2.80GHz, DIMM DDR2 1024MBx4 PC8500 1066MHz, PCI-E Sapphire ATI Radeon HD4850 512MB GDDR3 at maximum graphics settings). The music in the game is matched to the theme, but it gets boring very quickly. Designed to add epicness to the battles, the music only adds a touch of monotony to the already not very rich gameplay. The characters themselves are voiced well, from time to time the voice of the commentator is heard. Sometimes the demigods themselves are not averse to inserting the phrase "on topic".
To date, Demigod looks raw, unfinished, and certainly not able to compete with the gameplay of DotA honed over the years. The choice of 8 characters against 100 in DotA looks frivolous. The same situation is with the choice of equipment. It is worth considering the overstated requirements for hardware for such graphics. The project is saved by the fact that Chris Taylor took care of its creation - a man who, after the release of the game, promised to make serious improvements to the mechanics, add characters and maps, and optimize the graphics. Perhaps someday the annoying old lady "DotA" will give way to the young, just starting to fight for the gaming "Olympus" "Demigod".
